There's a new arrival in Coronation Street: Florrie Lindley, who is taking over the Corner Shop. Her first day on the job is not without incident as she runs into the local busy-body Ena Sharples. Meanwhile, Elsie Tanner is on at her son, Dennis, to get some work but he reminds her that it's not easy for someone who's just got out of prison. Later, there's a misunderstanding when Elsie accuses Dennis of taking money from her purse when in fact it was her daughter Linda. Also, Linda tells Elsie that she's leaving her husband. Elsie says she'll believe it when she sees it! At number 3, there's unrest at the Barlow's. Young Kenneth Barlow has an argument with his father, Frank, when he announces that he's met a girl and he's taking her to the Imperial Hotel. Frank argues that Ken has all but forgotten his working class roots.

Florrie is caught by the police selling firelighters after seven. Christine is annoyed that Ena is telling everyone that May has gone mad and breaks down. Kids scratch Susan's Dad's car. Ida embarrasses Ken by showing Susan his baby photos. Ivan turns up at the Rovers. Esther takes charge of Christine. Susan embarrases Ken by going into the Rovers. Linda bumps into Ivan.

Linda rows with Ivan for following her to Weatherfield. Swindley gives Ena a warning over her frequenting the Rovers. Elsie lets Ivan stay the night in the front parlour. They force Linda telling them she's pregnant. Ivan tells Linda he wants the baby. May returns from hospital and wonders what the neighbours will say.

Lucille runs away to be at No.7, Esther helps Harry to look after her. Swindley catches Ena at the Rovers. He upsets her and she collapses. Dennis turns up with a wad of money.

Dennis reveals he got the £25 at the dogs. Ena recovers in hospital. Lucille goes missing whilst in Esther's care. Concepta returns from Ireland and asks the Walkers if they'll have her back. May is upset when Christine doesn't want to see Malcolm anymore. Ena is visited by Vera and Martha. Ena accuses Martha of being after her job. Christine accuses Malcolm of being ashamed of her but he invites her to the rugby club dance. Lucille turns up having gone Christmas shopping. The police call for Dennis.

May complains of pains, Christine thinks she's attention seeking. Dennis refuses to tell Elsie why the police want him. Ena is convinced she's going to die. Lucille dresses up in Christine's dress and marks it. Dennis reveals the police suspect him of breaking and entering on the night he won the money, and hasn't an alibi. Harry reveals he saw Dennis at the dogs winning the money. Malcolm and Christine go to the dance. Ena walks out of hospital and back to the Mission.

The doctor tells Ena she's got senile decay. Florrie is in the paper after being fined £1 in court. Ena throws Martha out of the Mission. May tries to summon help over her headaches but dies in the hallway. The hospital give Christine, May's wedding ring. Dennis gets a job front of house at a club where he sees his father.

Christine is annoyed that Malcolm didn't see her over her mourning period and slams the door in his face. Ken and his student friends make ban-the-bomb posters until Ida orders them out of the house. Arnold Tanner turns up at No.11 after fifteen years and asks Elsie to give him a divorce so that he can marry Norah Dawson. She refuses and they argue before he storms out. Ena, seeing Arnold leaving the house from her vestry window, spreads it about that Elsie's got a fella. Harry is promoted to inspector at the bus depot.

Harry packs Lucille's items for her to return to the orphanage after the Christmas holidays.

Elsie is in a foul mood and tells Linda that the cause is Ena, who she overheard in the Rovers Return telling people that she has a boyfriend.

Elsie threatens Ena in the Rovers and tells her the man is, in fact, Arnold. The milkman can't raise Albert - Ken and David break into No.1 to find Albert collapsed in the kitchen. Dr. Tinsley feels that Albert's daughter, Beattie, ought to look after Albert. Christine gets a bill from the plumbers for £1, 1/3. The plumber's mate, Joe Makinson, takes the bill back in sympathy when she can't pay it. Ida alerts Beattie to Albert's collapse and condition but Albert refuses to live with his daughter. Elsie has some beauty cream and starts to relax when Arnold arrives to have a chat.

Beattie refuses to return home until Albert agrees to come with her.

Frank warns Ida again not to go running round after Albert and snaps at Ken when he thinks he's siding with his mother.

Harry has left a parcel on her Eileen's bus and she wants to give it back.

Elsie tells Dennis to stay in for their repaired television delivery, as well as for Linda and Ivan who are coming to do some shopping for the baby.

Ena objects to the police commandeering the Mission. Swindley and Miss Nugent prepare the hall. The residents of Coronation Street camp down together for the night.

The Walkers welcome their daughter Joan and her fiance Gordon. Frank disapproves of Ken buying on hire purchase. Dennis tries to get money to spend on a girl at the club.

Frank castigates Ida when she admits she's bought loose covers on hire purchase.

Annie castigates Jack due to his drunken behaviour in front of George Davies.

Mary Stubbs tells Ida that the residents are being offered the option to buy their houses for £200 each; Ida is interested and wonders how to persuade Frank.

Martha and Minnie try to get away with under paying their fares but get caught out by Harry.

Albert boils his kettle and it takes forty-one minutes to boil due to the poor gas pressure.

Vera Lomax asks Ena to look after her troublesome son Colin for her tomorrow.

Ena makes the most of spending time with her grandson, Colin. Linda despairs at the latest news of Number 9. Ken snaps when his family mention Susan's name.

The womenfolk watch as Jack escorts Joan to St. Thomas' church. They are late when the car won't start. Weatherfield County FC are interested in signing David up. The Walkers entertain their family at the Rovers after the reception at The Ridgeway although the majority of the Davies family have not come back, being teetotallers. However they endure Gordon's Uncle Fred all evening before discovering he is not a relative at all but just a friend of the family.

Dr. Graham tells Ena she has only twisted her ankle. Swindley insists she still leaves the Mission. Martha grows alarmed as Ena takes her house over. Emily moves into the vestry as temporary caretaker. Ken spends time at Marian Lund's flat. She is a librarian at the university and eleven years his senior. He tells her that he loves her. Ena tricks Martha into parting with her precious whisky. Albert gives Swindley a petition for the reinstatement of Ena. Marian tells Ken not to tell his parents about her yet. Christine tells Esther she doesn't want to get engaged to Joe but doesn't know how to tell him.

Nancy Leathers hears from the Council that they have an OAP bungalow for her. Frank worries that Ida is late home from visiting Beattie's. Dennis is summoned to Lenny Phillips' office. Ken calls on Beattie Pearson and discovers Ida has not been there. Lenny tells Dennis he is not at all talented but wants him to work for him as a talent scout. Frank contacts the police who realise that her description matches that of a woman who was knocked down in Gray Street and is dead. They arrive in the Street to tell him.

Concepta and Harry are married at St. Theresa's where Lucille is the bridesmaid and Len is the best man. Linda is jealous when Ivan and Nona Willis spend the day together working in the Rovers. At the reception, the Hewitts receive telegrams from Alice Burgess, David Barlow, Billy Walker, Joan Davies, Ivan and Nona. Dot Greenhalgh fancies Bill but Alf tries to get him interested in Elsie - something which doesn't go unnoticed by Ena. Harry and Concepta go on honeymoon and book into the Cresta Hotel at Port Erin on the Isle of Man.

Swindley organises the evening's trip to the Blackpool illuminations. Doreen agrees to become the new barmaid and gives her notice in to Swindley. Two young lads and clerks from the Town Hall, Phil Braithwaite and Norman Dobson, arrive looking for digs in the area. Jack, Ena, Minnie, Martha, Albert, Ken, Val, Frank, Christine, Dennis, Jed, Jean, Elsie, Bill, Alf, Doreen, Swindley and Emily go to Blackpool. Brian looks after Esther, in bed with flu. Elsie and Bill become brazen in their affair. The coach leaves with Ena still having her palm read by a Fortune Teller.

Elsie apologies to Annie. The Cheveskis receive a letter from a workmate of Ivan's in Canada. His photos of the affluent life there interest Linda. Elsie and Ena confront each other in the Street and verbally attack each other as the residents look on. Dennis has to stop Elsie from hitting Ena, who ends the fight by shouting that if she had written the letter she would have had the decency to sign it. Elsie realises with shock that she's right. The argument over, the residents wonder who did write it.

Frank rows with Ken for not telling him he'd given up his job. He refuses to let Dennis get him a job. Ken tells him he's not prepared to listen to him calling him 'idle' anymore and he'd do any job to pay his way. Minnie buys a see-through nightie from Swindley. Word spreads that Ken asked Dennis for a job - Elsie is amused. Returning from an Adam Faith concert Christine meets Ken at the station coffee room. He tells her he's leaving for London but she makes him realise that he's running away from himself and he returns home.

Dennis seeks items to make a costume for the fancy dress contest at the Orinoco. Harry buys a surprise for Concepta to make amends. Ena makes peace with a relieved Minnie and Martha.

Ena gets more than she bargained for as she tucks into Minnie's Christmas pudding. Elsie has a change of heart and prepares dinner for Dennis. The Hewitts' television breaks before the Queen's speech.

Annie decides the culprit when money vanishes from the till. Concepta rejoices when Harry capitulates and agrees that she can return to work at the Rovers permanently. Elsie sticks up for Dennis.

Elsie believes Dennis is innocent. He remembers that Ena was in the pub at the same time. Ena confirms Dennis didn't go near the till, and tells Annie so. Elsie tells Annie the Tanners are withdrawing their custom from the Rovers. Albert takes to his bed with flu and is nursed by Minnie. Annie discovers both Florrie and Len were on their own in the Rovers when the money went missing. Elsie shocks the Walkers by refusing to go to the Rovers when Linda phones her there from Canada.

Ena admires Elsie's stand. When Annie insinuates that Len is dishonest, he, Harry and Concepta walk out of the Rovers. Annie refuses to do business with Florrie. The regulars boycott the Rovers.

Annie is frightened to tell Jack about the money. The regulars gather at The Flying Horse in protest at Annie's actions. Jack plants £20 in the till to make amends. Dennis goes against Elsie's wishes and uses the phone in the Rovers. Annie tells Jack about the money.

Annie does her best to make up with the customers. Frank discovers Florrie has been over-charging him 10/- on his orders. Ken and Florrie explain that Ida ran up a debt with the shopping before she died. The extra money on their bills is to pay back the debt.

Minnie's mother's banging on the ceiling begins to get to Ena and she feels that she has to move on from 15 Jubilee Terrace. Elsie and Dennis use the phone at Miami Modes to phone Linda. Dennis' cheque for £8 16/- finally arrives from Lenny Phillips and the Walkers cash it. Minnie's mother gets up when she hears Ena has gone. Martha can't take Ena in because Lily's family is staying with her. Dennis cooks Elsie a meal as a 'thank you' for defending him. Florrie takes to dressing up and going out. Ena arrives back to stay at the Mission.

Albert refuses to let Ena stay at the Mission. With Phil and Norman gone from the shop flat, Ena goes after their room but Florrie is now using it as a store room. Ena dumps herself on Dennis and, to Elsie's horror, moves into No. 11.

Elsie tells Dennis to get rid of Ena but she herself decides to move on. Concepta tells Harry she's tired of the whippets; he feels he's getting too old for them. Ena moves back in with Minnie. Dennis gets a tape recorder on approval.

The residents suspect Florrie has a man but she is really spending her time at bingo. Frank is tired of working to rule at the GPO. Dennis takes Lucky Lolita for her exercise, on commission. Florrie wins at bingo. Dennis loses Lucky.

Concepta is horrified when Harry feeds Lucky Lolita steak and port. Len organises a minibus to see Lucky race. Elsie saves up £5 towards a Spanish holiday. Harry spends the housekeeping on entering Lucky for a race. Ken asks some of the residents about their drinking habits.

Ken starts writing an article. Dennis thinks he'll have time to pay Elsie back but she tells him she's booking the holiday next week. Harry, Concepta, Frank, Jack, Albert, Ena, Minnie, Martha, Len and Dennis go to the races. As the tension mounts, Harry, Dennis and Minnie can't bear to watch.At No.11, Elsie discovers her money is missing.

Minnie's pipes are frozen. Elsie takes Dennis' winnings and threatens him with the police.

Ken's article is published in left-wing magazine Survival. Not everyone is pleased when they read Ken's article as they feel it attacks the working class.

The "Ex-student slams neighbours" story appears in the paper: Len and Harry grow very angry over the article. Frank rows with Ken, ashamed of his disloyalty to his class. He tells Ken he can't write any more articles. Harry wants to write complaining to the papers but Len feels it would do no good. Elsie feels the article was well-written but warns Ken that Len is after him. Len insults Ken to Frank and refuses to apologise causing Frank almost to fight him in the Street. Ken realises he'll have to stand up to the residents. When he tries to put across his view point in the Rovers, Len hits him and they brawl across the pub, Ken being knocked out.

Annie thinks she's found blood on the Rovers' floor as she cleans up and is annoyed that Jack isn't bothered by the fight. Ken has concussion from a cut on his head and has been told to stay in bed by Dr. Graham. Frank is upset that Ken doesn't like the area he was brought up.The Banner newspaper rings the Rovers asking for Ken and Jack goes to fetch him. Len and Harry are in the pub when he walks in, annoying them when he claims he's "fighting fit" again. Jack and Annie try to calm the two men. The paper asks Ken to write articles on "Life in a typical Northern town" and he goads Len to punch him again. Despite his previous doubts, Frank thinks Ken should write the articles when he hears about the 180 guinea fee.

Elsie's Sunday morning peace is disturbed by children playing outside and Dennis's demand for his breakfast. Concepta has a headache but insists on going to mass as usual. Annie frantically packs in her usual cleaning routine prior to an overnight stay in Derby visiting Joan and Gordon. She also leaves Jack a list of jobs to do and instructions to keep an eye on Len and the Barlows.

Annie makes an unexpected return and is startled to hear from neighbours that Jack has been getting up to some very peculiar antics after hours. Dennis tries to repair the damage but only succeeds in making Annie think the worst. Concepta tells Harry that they are going to be having a baby.

Ena worries about her financial position. Minnie embroiders Lucky Lolita's name on a jacket for her. Dennis writes a letter for Minnie to the Mission chairman, Mr. Baxter, asking for Ena's job back. Albert writes to Baxter giving his job up and suggesting the reinstatement of Ena. Concepta enjoys seeing Harry run round her. Lucky races again. Harry puts £5 on, Len £10 and they persuade Elsie to put £10 on.

The committee offer Ena her job back. Minnie is pleased when she agrees to return. Ena is shocked to hear that Dennis wrote on her behalf. Dennis discovers he didn't send the letter. The residents plan a "welcome home" party for Ena. Albert moves back to No.1. Ena enjoys the party until Mr. Baxter turns up.

Mr. Baxter enjoyed himself at the party but Ena is still annoyed. Dennis organises a charity performance for the Over 60's Club‏‎. Ena refuses to have the concert in the Mission. Elsie forgets her own birthday. The committee gives their permission to the concert. Ena warns them that it will end in disaster.

Dennis sells more tickets than seats and the concert is over-booked. Ena discovers that the performers, the "Blue Streak Rockets", were banned and the police tell them they cannot perform. The Walkers go to a Brewery Dance, planning to stay the night in a plush hotel. Ena locks the piano lid but Minnie opens it with a hair pin. She entertains the audience of four hundred with constant renditions of Goodbye, Dolly Gray. Captain Johnson and his troupe break down but send the sealions, Bunny and Sherry on. Dennis has to cancel the concert, causing an uproar. Ena gets drunk with the Rockets. Dennis is stuck with the Rockets and sealions for the night. He gets the Rovers' key off Concepta and installs them in the pub. The Walkers return home to find sealions in the bath and the Rockets in their bed

Annie gossips about Concepta's age in the shop. Concepta overhears and is upset. She breaks down, worried about having a baby at her age. Harry returns home early to find her missing. He tracks her down to the Red Rec and reassures her that everything will be alright. Ken does a lot of overtime but Frank discovers that the school is on a half-day.

Ken reveals he is writing a novel about three boys growing up together in a back street. Jack collapses behind the bar and is taken to see Dr. Graham. Annie blames herself, fearing the worst but he is cleared; he'd only overeaten. Annie thinks he is lying to save her feelings.

Annie fusses over Jack. Dennis goes to London to help Lenny Phillips open a new office. Annie refuses to believe Len and Harry that Jack is fine and Concepta takes her side. Harry plans to sell Lucky Lolita but Concepta doesn't want her to go. Annie goes to see Dr. Graham to find out the truth about Jack.

Annie has found out the truth about Jack's mystery illness and when she returns from her investigations, the Rovers becomes a different place again as she loads job after job on Jack. After a good deal of thought, Harry and Len enter Lucky Lolita for the races in the last hope that she will get back to her old form. Back at the Vestry, Ena falls to the floor with a mild stroke and, as the night wears on, nobody comes to help her.

Albert spies Ena through a window and Harry smashes the door down. The unconscious Ena is rushed to St Mark's Hospital but Martha gives her name instead of Ena's. When the residents try to locate Ena they cannot and fear she has died. Annie discovers Ena is on the danger list.

Jack takes care of his dying eighty-seven year old mother in Barnsley.Ena is diagnosed as having had a mild stroke and of hitting her head as she fell, causing concussion.. Len puts a fireplace in for Elsie and sets the tongues wagging. Martha and Minnie go to visit Ena but she doesn't seem to recognize them.

Jack returns to the Rovers. After four days Ena still can't recognise anyone. Len spends more of his time at No.11 than at work. Elsie doesn't encourage him. Dennis decides to stay in London permanently. The residents wonder when Nellie will find out about Len and Elsie.

Minnie and Martha smuggle a bottle of milk stout into the hospital in a bunch of plastic tulips. Elsie shocks Ena by visiting her, worried about her condition. Minnie and Martha buy Ena a mynah bird called Archie as a welcome home present. Len reveals to Harry that Nellie and Stanley have left home.

Word spreads about Nellie Fairclough leaving home. Albert, Minnie and Martha go in a taxi to bring Ena home but she returns in an ambulance. Archie keeps repeating "Minnie Caldwell" and "Ena won't like it". Len helps Elsie decorate the parlour in his firm's time. Ena refuses to give Archie houseroom. Elsie cleans up Len's house for him. Harry finds them together.

Florrie asks Len to fix her up with a new fireplace before hearing that Elsie is keeping house for him. Concepta meets a distressed Nellie and tells Harry to sort Len out.Florrie snubs Len and takes her business to his boss.

Len is sacked from Birtwistles when someone tells his boss he's been doing foreigners. Elsie rows with Concepta for coming between Harry and Len. Albert puts his name down at the Council for an allotment. Elsie suspects Concepta of shopping Len but Ena suspects Florrie. In fact it is Martha who confesses. Elsie announces publicly that she is not seeing Len. Len collects his darts and walks out of the Rovers.

Martha takes Archie in when Ena can't put up with it saying "Ena won't like it" day and night. Len starts up business on his own in his backyard and the one next door, owned by the Bensons. Ena ventures out of her bed to visit the Rovers. Behind Concepta's back, Harry sells Lucky Lolita and buys a saloon car with £20 on Hire Purchase to pay off. Len helps Harry out when the headlamp goes and they are reconciled.

For Easter Monday the Walkers, Hewitts and Len go off for a picnic in the car. Martha and Minnie take Ena out in a bath chair to the park. At the picnic, the car rolls into a pond and has to be pushed out. Elsie joins Florrie on a date with a couple of reps. Ena gets stuck in her bath chair when a storm breaks. On their way home the car packs up in Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The neighbours hear strange noises in No.9. Martha hears that new people have moved in. Concepta grows frightened of the noises and doesn't like staying in No.7 on her own. She and Elsie are hurt when no one believes they can hear noises. The paper carries reports of a night prowler. Minnie sees a light on in the house prompting Harry and Ken to investigate.

The search party finds nothing in No.9. Martha finds a mysterious message planted in No.9's letterbox. Elsie and Concepta explore the house during a storm and find food on the table. They are joined by the residents. Len catches someone in the backing.

Len captures Billy Makin, a little lad who tells of how the Black Hand Gang have been meeting in the house. The brewery pass the alterations on the Rovers and Len starts knocking about. Elsie refuses to go on another blind date with Florrie. On holiday, Ken helps Len out in the Rovers. They pretend to have a fight to see Annie's reaction. Elsie discovers that the blind date was a real looker.

Florrie has another date with Rep Lawrence, at the theatre. Frank goes to the theatre with friends from work. Florrie and Frank are both stood up so they go to a cafe together and enjoy each other's company. Ken thinks about buying a scooter. The Walkers get a phone call from a reporter and receive a telegram from Billy telling them not to believe all they read

The Sunday papers carry reports of Philippa's engagement. Annie is horrified by the reports of fun-loving Philippa. She blames Dennis for introducing them, Elsie for letting Dennis go to London and Jack for driving Billy away. Billy phones to confirm that he is engaged. The GPO decides there are too many "Coronation Street's" in the area and they should be renamed. Ken buys a scooter and shocks Martha by giving Minnie a ride. Frank reveals that there are eight "Coronation Street's" in the district and seven of them have to go.

Annie grows hysterical over not hearing from Billy. The Council announces the Street is definitely to be renamed and called Florida Street. Billy and Philippa travel up from London. Nellie and Stanley return to Len. Albert starts a petition for the Town Hall. Annie breaks down when Jack reminds her that she isn't a lady herself. Annie feels her whole world is collapsing around her.

Annie warms to Philippa when she has similar ideas to her about the pub. Billy borrows Harry's car to take Philippa out. Annie plans to go with them but Billy puts her off. Ena writes to Prince Philip about the street's name. Frank refuses to sign the petition because of his job. The front axle goes and Billy and Philippa are stuck in the country.

Billy and Philippa return at 3.00am. Esther announces she's leaving the Street to live in Moor Lane. Len and Ken become preoccupied with Philippa. She sets a sunlamp up in the living room. Whilst Billy repairs the car, Ken entertains her. The lamp burns the tablecloth and in the confusion that follows, Annie discovers Philippa with her arms around Ken.

Annie worries about Ken's intentions with Philippa. Esther packs and is happy to leave. Albert gives her an old map of the area as a present. Concepta despairs as Lucille hero worships Philippa. Behind her parents' back she experiments with make-up. Annie tells Billy about Ken - he pretends to be outraged before admitting he knows. Ena, Minnie and Martha go to the pictures to see an 'X' rated French film with subtitles and see the made-up Lucille there.

Lucille is unusually helpful about the house. Ena receives a letter from the Palace telling her that her complaint has been noted. Annie tries to dissuade Billy from marrying Philippa. Lucille secures Ena's silence by running errands for her but Harry discovers about her antics and bans her from seeing Philippa. Philippa is upset to discover her rival has landed a part in a film. A stranger, Matilda Grimshaw, hunts Ena down.

Billy and Philippa break off their engagement as she wants to return to beauty contests. When Mrs. Grimshaw insults Minnie, Ena challenges her in the Rovers. Mrs. Grimshaw tells her that the Council have decided that her "Coronation Street" is to remain, with its fifty-four houses. Ena refuses to drop the fight and sends Mrs. Grimshaw off with a flea in her ear to the applause of the residents.

Doreen packs in her job at a grocers on Rosamund Street and looks for more work. She refuses to return to the Rovers or Elliston's. Christine feels bored and longs for something fresh. Frank and Florrie keep their liaisons secret. Doreen and Sheila are puzzled by Christine. A boy chats her up but she acts mysteriously. Ena goes to a convalescent home in Southport. Christine tells Elsie she can't cope with any more "tomorrows".

The publishers reject Ken's novel. Frank tells Ken about Florrie and receives his blessing. Doreen reveals that Swindley has been taken over and she agrees to go back to work for him. Christine can't understand why the workers remain in the factory. She refuses to sink, she wants to swim, not be a machine.

Swindley, Emily and Doreen prepare for the coming of their new Greek owner.Frank buys a new blouse for Florrie, having spilt soup on her old one.Sheila finds a morose Christine on the roof, looking down on the people below and bemoaning that no one cares about her. Soon afterwards, Annie spots a police car outside the factory. Christine is on the edge of the roof and threatening to jump.

Christine can't believe she climbed onto the roof. Lucille hopes that Ken will marry Christine. Swindley is ordered to display his V-neck sweaters in the window but only has one. Sheila and Doreen think Christine is heading for trouble.

Jack is summoned to sort out his mother's will. The residents hope Colin will be good for Christine. Swindley gets Emily and Doreen to become models in the shop, wearing the new stock.

Christine buys a new outfit and tells Elsie she's playing with fire. Gamma Garments advertise their new blouses on TV. Emily and Doreen model the new range. Concepta has a fainting-fit whilst shopping.

Swindley turns the loft of the shop into a store room and Len does the alterations. Len tells Elsie he has a message for her from Bill Gregory. After hours, Len works at Gamma. He falls and gets his foot stuck in the floorboards and is left on his own in the shop.

Nellie Fairclough worries when Len doesn't return all night. Sheila reveals that her father is retiring and that the family is moving to the country. She doesn't want to go and is delighted when Doreen suggests they get a flat. Swindley is troubled by his female tenant who entertains male friends a lot. Len tells Elsie that Bill Gregory is returning.

Bill Gregory returns. Lucille tells him how much time Len has been spending with Elsie. Minnie worries about her mother's health. Business is good for Len and he considers taking someone else on. Bill threatens Len over Elsie. Len tells him they're just friends. Bill and Elsie meet.

All the wedding plans are in place. Val doesn't like her bouquet and makes up her own arrangement. Ken suffers from a hangover and nerves. Annie, Esther, Florrie, Nancy, Beattie, Len, Minnie, Martha, Ena, Sheila and Doreen watch as Ken and Val marry at St. Mary's. Lucille is bridesmaid. Ena tries to help Elsie overcome her depression - she tells her to keep an air of mystery about her when dealing with men. Annie gets drunk at the reception. Concepta goes into labour in the Rovers and is taken to hospital by Jack.

The Hewitts' party is shattered by the news about Christopher. Ena and Martha take charge of a distraught Annie and Concepta is sedated. The police take over. Concepta disappears and is found searching the streets by Florrie. The police find the pram on wasteland. Det Sergeant Sowman discovers Lucille was jealous of Christopher. The residents enquire around the neighbourhood. Lucille reveals she left Christopher with a girl from school, Brenda Cowan.

Annie spends the day preparing the spread for the party. Elsie borrows a dress from the shop to wear at the party. Albert starts work. Len doesn't tell Nellie about the party and is criticised by the residents. The regulars gather at the Rovers for the party. Florrie feels hurt by the way Frank is not interested in her anymore. Swindley spills a trifle over Elsie's dress. The Walkers retire to bed with the party still on, worn out by the preparations.

Christmas Eve: Ena agrees to play the piano for the play. The residents try to make mend with the costumes, although Minnie doesn't go down too well as a gaiety girl. Ena opens with Land of Hope and Glory and Emily gets stage fright

A time for frankness, family feuding and farewell.

Florrie joins Martha in gossiping about Christine and Frank but for once Ena isn't interested. Elsie and Christine return exhausted from the January sales. Elsie suggests going out that night but Christine already has a date with Frank. After learning how to make the dish at school, Lucille makes a curry for a reluctant Harry. Florrie refuses to serve Christine a loaf when she calls into the Corner Shop and Val gives her the cold shoulder. Lucille is upset when Harry shows little enthusiasm over the meal.

Minnie realises that Jed hasn't had his breakfast, intending her to have it because he's behind with his rent. Martha has heard from Elsie that Christine has a new man. In the Corner Shop, Albert unwittingly helps spread the gossip and pushes Elsie for details.

Annie takes Jack to task for what she deems to be his unkempt appearance behind the bar seeing as it's Saturday night. Jed says his market business is up. Albert wonders why Frank vanished so quickly from the Rovers. Martha is pleased that Christine has chucked Frank, citing the age gap. Frank and Christine have been to a jazz concert but at a cafe afterwards Frank is in a mood.

Concepta fetches in food for Annie to make a spread for the darts' team night against The Flying Horse although Jack thinks they'd be happy with just a meat pie. Harry is depressed that Johnny's case is being heard today and he might lose his job. Jerry demands five shillings back from Jed that is owing which leaves him having to get cigarettes from Jack on the slate. Having slept badly, Harry mopes over his breakfast as he thinks about Johnny's predicament. Frank interrupts a chat in the Corner Shop between Elsie, Christine and Florrie about "Ronnie". Ken is offended when Concepta says it's right that he's going back to teaching as he has responsibilities towards Val now. Not knowing of Len's confession, Concepta thinks Johnny only has himself to blame if he didn't know which of his passengers had paid their fares. Johnny tells his wife how bitter he is towards Harry. Concepta hears from Harry where Johnny lives. The Gamma Garments sale hasn't been a success and Swindley takes his frustrations out on Emily and Doreen. Jed and Sheila prepare for a day on the market selling genuine Fair Isle sweaters...made in Japan.

Emily is devastated about losing her job.

Doreen quits her job so that Emily can stay.

Frank proposes to Christine but she isn't sure.

Swindley threatens to resign unless Emily is given her job back.

Val discovers Frank is still seeing Christine.

Jack and Albert go to their reunion.

Consumers flock to Gamma Garments for Emily's sake.

Jed installs a television at Minnie's.

Swindley gives the water job to Joe.

Jerry tells Len that he's been offered another job.

Elsie turns detective when Doreen hints that she has information about the letter. Jerry attempts to play matchmaker for Len. Swindley presides at the over-60s dance at the Mission Hall.

Ena returns from Sheffield.

Swindley gives Jed a warning about misusing the Mission Hall.

Gamma Garments starts a credit service.

Frank buys his wedding outfit but Christine has bad news for him. The rent collector comes looking for Elsie. Lucille looks forward to her foreign school trip.

Swindley discovers that Elsie is protected by the 1957 Rent Act.

Elsie gets Len to change the locks in anticipation of the bailiffs' return. Valerie is amused to learn the identity of Ken's admirer. Minnie feels the strain of Jed's departure on her finances.

Dennis arrives from London.

All the street come to watch as the bailiffs come to number 11.

Frank returns from his stay in Scarborough and appears chirpy. Dennis asks Len what his intentions are towards Elsie. Frank and Christine run into each other and are friendly. Dennis keeps his exploits in London very quiet. He then receives a mysterious telegram.

Dennis stops using the Rovers' phone when he discovers the Barlows have had one installed since he was last in Weatherfield. The residents think Frank must have something else on his mind to recover from Christine so easily. In Swindley's absence, Emily and Doreen run Gamma Garments very smoothly. Mavis Fox arrives from London looking for a "Coronation Street" with detached houses in. Dennis catches up with her and explains that his Grannie lives in the street whilst he's looking after his father's mill. She is thrilled and he installs her in a hotel. Emily and Doreen fall for the van drivers, Alf and Fred who transfer some of their stock to another branch. They then discover there was no transfer and the stock has been stolen.

Det. Sgt. Shorrocks of the CID interviews Emily and Doreen. They are reluctant to give a description of the good-looking robber. Ken suspects Frank of being up to something. Mavis Fox calls at No.11 to visit Dennis' grandmother. Elsie plays along as the cleaner. Mr Papagopolous is pleased that the stock was stolen as it was old stock that couldn't sell and was insured. Elsie demands that Dennis tells Mavis the truth. Frank tells Ken he plans to leave the GPO and buy a DIY shop. Dennis can't bring himself to tell Mavis.

Dennis tells Elsie that Mavis chucked him when he told her about his humble life. She feels sorry for him before discovering he is lying. She threatens to tell Mavis. The police recover all the stolen stock to the girls' dismay. Dennis tells Mavis the truth. She tells him she'll have to return to London to think about their relationship. Martha loses Ena's pension book. Frank refuses to listen to Ken's opposition to the shop. Ken thinks he shouldn't give up the security of the GPO. Mavis returns to London. Elsie is horrified to learn Dennis let Mavis go when she discovers her mother owns a few hotels.

The assistants celebrate at Miami Modes when they discover Mrs Dumbarton is leaving. They are told one of them will be promoted. Frank cashes in his policies and signs the shop's lease. Martha reports the missing book and tells Ena it's gone. Christine and Elsie think Dot will get the supervisor's job. Jerry asks Sheila to go steady with him. Ken returns Ena's pension book after a schoolboy finds it. She discovers that this week's pension has been drawn.

Ken stands by pupil Michael Butterworth, believing he didn't cash the pension. At Miami Modes, Dot starts to boss Elsie and Christine. Ena gets the truth out of Michael, that he cashed the pension and spent the money. Christine is offered the supervisor's job. Sheila agrees to go steady with Jerry. Swindley hears that he may be promoted to Gamma Garments Head Office. Ena reports Michael to the police.

Swindley reveals he has been promoted to Administration at Gamma Garments' Head Office. Jerry tries to get Len to invite Elsie to the Federation Dance. Ken ignores Ena because of Michael. Elsie agrees to go to the Dance on Wednesday. Ena worries what will happen to Michael as the residents turn against her. Dennis books a table at a posh restaurant to treat Elsie, but also on Wednesday.

Michael appears at the juvenile court and is put on probation. Elsie is torn between letting Dennis and Len down. In the end, she drops Dennis. At the dance, she sees Florrie with a handsome man who turns out to be her cousin. Doreen takes Elsie's place as Dennis' dinner partner but is annoyed when he doesn't try anything on. Elsie and Len grow very intimate at the dance.

Christine starts as trainee supervisor at Miami Modes and tries to cut down on Dot and Elsie's chatter. Concepta tells Annie that she doesn't know how much Harry earns. Annie tells her she's too docile. Swindley is shocked when Emily takes the news of his departure lightly. Dennis discovers Elsie went out with Len and feels unwanted. Elsie refuses to go out with Len again because he is still legally married. Concepta tackles Harry about his earnings. Elsie begins to think that the power has gone to Christine's head.

Annie makes enquiries and tells Concepta that Harry earns £14 7/6 a week. At Miami Modes, Christine reprimands Elsie for getting a dress on discount for Sheila. Emily and Doreen fall for the new manager, Mr. Cresswell. Harry tells Concepta he earns £13 a week. Elsie tries to give Christine some advice but she tells Elsie that their friendship stops outside the shop. Swindley tells the girls Cresswell is only a buyer. Annie gets a letter from Arthur Forsythe-Jones saying he'll be coming up whilst Jack is away fishing.

Annie packs Jack off to Scotland. Frank starts to clean out the shop. Concepta's father is taken ill and is forced to retire. She feels that Harry could run the garage for him. Annie cleans the Rovers in the hope that Arthur will arrive. Dennis enjoys running Lenny's agency, auditioning strippers and chorus girls.

Frank's premises have a reputation of being a bad omen for businesses. Concepta goes to Ireland. Dennis finds it hard to get people interested in his shows. Concepta sends Harry a telegram telling him to hand in his notice.

Concepta returns unexpectedly from Ireland. She tells Harry she wants to buy her father's garage-cum-grocers in instalments. Arthur Forsythe-Jones arrives at the Rovers. He enjoys the atmosphere of the pub. Annie agrees to go to a show with him. Harry resigns from the buses, planning a future in Ireland.

Swindley spends his last day at the shop. Emily and Doreen buy him a pen as a farewell present. Jack wants to return from Scotland when he discovers Arthur is around but Annie puts him off. Lucille doesn't want to go to Ireland. Annie can't find anyone to look after the bar for the evening and has to cancel her date with Arthur. He begs her to let him work behind the bar instead. Emily, Doreen and Ena toast Swindley and his future. Arthur impresses the customers and answers the phone when Jack telephones. Ken warns Concepta that Lucille could cause trouble. Lucille begs Harry to let her stay, saying she wants her mum.

Jack returns to sort out Annie and Arthur Forsythe-Jones. She tells him there is nothing in their relationship, but Jack sees that Arthur knows his way around the pub. Dennis discovers that both Elsie and Len are holidaying in Blackpool. Arthur takes Annie to the theatre. Harry tries to stall Concepta over Ireland but she is impatient to leave. Annie returns at 1 o'clock in the morning.

Annie tells Jack she only went out with Arthur Forsythe-Jones to make him jealous. Val finds it hard to look after Ken whilst working and he takes suffrage. Harry decides that they're staying in Coronation Street. Lucille's worry about her schooling tips the scales. Arthur gives Annie a plant and leaves. When Concepta throws out Lucille's toys, Lucille tells her that they're not going to Ireland. Concepta walks out.

Elsie and Len return from holiday in Blackpool. Elsie is hurt by Dennis' coolness. Harry finds Concepta in a playground and tells her that he can't leave Weatherfield as it's his home. Frank has hassle with Ethel Tyson, his tenant above the shop, who is two months in arrears. Concepta threatens to go to Ireland on her own. Elsie tells Len to tread easy with Dennis as they were only together for one afternoon.

Frank advertises the grand opening of his DIY shop. Concepta blames Lucille for Harry's change of mind. Elsie tries to make up with Dennis but he refuses to listen to her. Concepta tells Harry he's selfish and always has been. He accuses her of being after her father's money. She tells him to go and live with Len and to take Lucille with him. Lucille hears and starts to pack, begging Concepta to let her leave. Concepta stops rowing and tries to comfort her. She brings the two of them together and Concepta resigns herself to her fate at No.7.

Sheila is fed up as Jerry never takes her out. Len and Jerry finish up at Frank's shop. Harry has an interview for a sales job. Albert accidentally grows parsley instead of onions at his allotment and gives them out to everyone to get rid of them. Christine makes it clear to Elsie that she doesn't like her taking personal calls at work. She overhears Elsie complaining about her on the phone to Len. As he admires his new shop front, Frank is confident that the opening will draw a crowd. The residents are worried for him as the shop is in a bad location. Florrie sorts out the refreshments for the opening. Len gets a letter from Stanley and is upset that Stanley doesn't seem bothered about seeing him. Elsie takes the day off work to go to the opening, without clearing it with Christine.

Frank is in good spirits after a successful first day of trading. Len takes Elsie out to the pictures. She doesn't care that she's supposed to be at work. David can't understand why Ken is still staying in the Street and believes he can do better than Bessie Street School. Frank tells David he now understands why he stayed away when Ida died. Valerie suggests that Ken apply to teach at a grammar school as he'll earn more money. Ken dismisses the idea as he's happy where he is. David buys everyone drinks at the Rovers. Harry refuses it as he's bitter about not being in work.

Harry swallows his pride and Kenneth makes a date.

Harry drives the darts picnic - Dennis, Walter, Frank, Jack, Alf, Jerry, Ken, Albert and Len to New Brighton. Concepta is not happy when she learns that Harry will have to work some nights. The coach keeps breaking down and the men get drunk. When a policeman tries to get the men to quieten down at 2.00am, Albert knocks his helmet off and Alf tries to hit him. He calls for a prison van.

Dennis realises something is wrong when he finds the flat door locked. The Street is aroused and Dennis smashes a window to get in as Len and Harry try to break the door down. Dr. Aston arrives and Sheila is rescued. Dennis cuts his arm and is covered in blood. Len offers Elsie a no-strings relationship but she refuses. Sheila is taken to hospital in an ambulance. Frank puts shop flat tenant Ethel Tyson's rent up - she refuses to pay it.

None of the wedding guests want to share a car with Ena so she arrives at the church on her own. Myra arrives before Jerry who is taken to a pub by Dennis and Walter. After the wedding, Dennis reads telegrams from Doreen, the Walkers and Sheila. The Booths go off on honeymoon in Torquay. Ena returns to the Vestry to find it wrecked, the harmonium shattered and the furniture slashed.

It is Christmas Day and news spreads around the Street that the surprise is a "This Is Your Life" but no one knows whose life it is. Elsie warns Dennis that it had better not be hers. As the residents gather in the Mission Hall, Dennis announces it is Annie's life. Annie is surprised when the show includes a recorded message from Arthur Forsythe-Jones and visits from Joan, Billy, Ena, Minnie, Martha, Esther, opera producer Edgar Nuttall and George Stubbins, the man who led the horse on which she portrayed Lady Godiva. Esther announces that she's moving to Glasgow.

Dennis is threatened with the sack if he makes another mistake. Len reveals that the PPOP members are all doing business with Laurie and that Alderman Langton has sold Laurie his share of the factory. Val doesn't know what to do to help Ken. She blames him and he hates her for not being completely interested in him. He tells her he doesn't need a wife, he needs someone who understands him. They realise they shouldn't have married. Len thinks of taking on an apprentice with all the work at the shop and the club. Dennis takes the blame for a smashed crate so that he will be sacked. After drowning his sorrows, Ken returns home to find Val has left. Val arrives at Dave's flat with her suitcase.

Ena press-gangs the residents into going to the service. Frank demands £25 for the repayment for the furniture. Stuart Hodges turns up and Emily falls for him.

Myra only pays Frank back £20. Stuart tells Emily he plans to see the Mission of Glad Tidings bursting, not close it. He wants to brighten up the Mission. Myra puts the £5 down on a deposit for a holiday. Val thinks of joining the congregation when she sees Stuart. The Representative from the hire purchase company tells Jerry that Myra hasn't paid the last two months' instalments. Martha finds it hard work coping with two jobs. Jerry discovers Myra has not paid the mortgage for three months. She tells Jerry she is pregnant.

Martha goes to Lily's to look after the children and Minnie stands in for her at the Rovers and the Viaduct Sporting Club. Stuart wins Ena over by helping her wash the Mission walls. Jerry is horrified when Myra continues to spend on hire purchase. Myra tells Jerry the £20 she paid Frank was from her dad. He tells her they owe £85. She breaks down and he tells her that he'll take over the payments to sort them out. Gus leaves Minnie on her own at the club where she has an accident whilst cleaning the stairs.

Stuart and Dennis find Minnie at the bottom of the stairs, having fallen through the bannisters. Len grows annoyed as Laurie doesn't pay him for the work at the club. Minnie is taken to hospital, Ena plans to sue Laurie. Jerry refuses to do foreigners to get more money, not knowing that the electric bill has arrived. Gus gives £10 to Dennis to bribe Minnie with but then discovers that it's Len's fault, not theirs.

Minnie convalesces with Ena with her torn ligament. Jerry asks Len for a rise but Len tells him he hasn't been paid by Laurie yet. The Booths' electricity is cut off for not paying the bill. Stuart arranges a holiday for Minnie at the seaside. Len lends Jerry £3 to pay the electricity. Stuart calls in a solicitor to sort out Minnie's claim. Wormold is annoyed that Len vouched for Jerry over the mortgage.

Myra is refused credit in the Corner Shop. Val insists Ken buys a car rather than them going on holiday. Harry tries to help the Booths manage their money but they still can't afford to pay the money they owe.

Jerry refuses charity from the neighbours. Elsie tells Irma she's welcome to use their bath. Jerry rows with Len when he tells him Myra wears the trousers. He asks Jack to lend him £80 but is turned down. Dennis walks in on Irma's bath, to Elsie's amusement. Frank gets drunk and breaks the news that he has won £5,000 on the premium bonds.

Frank starts throwing his weight about the Street. Martha is invited to Spain with the family for a holiday - her first trip abroad. Len is sued by Minnie's solicitor. He has no orders coming in and has to sack Eddie and Jerry. George Dickinson agrees to pay the Booths' debts if they'll live with him. Myra blames it on Jerry not earning enough. Jerry gives up and agrees to everything George and Myra says. Len settles out of court and gives Ena £50.

Frank sells his shop to Summitt Supermarkets for £6,000. He buys a new car, a white zodiac, and throws a party in the Rovers. Jerry finishes at the Builder's Yard and is taken on at Roscoe & Pitts. Martha gets a passport. Frank is patronising to the Booths and is cold shouldered. The residents drink Frank's champagne but grow annoyed as he lords it over them. Ena plays the piano but the party ends abruptly as Martha dies of a heart attack in the snug.

Ena lays out Martha's body in the vestry for people to pay their respects. The Haddons sort through her belongings at Mawdsley Street. Minnie returns and learns the tragic news.

Val and Concepta lament how little they see of their husbands. Minnie finds it hard to cope with Charlie's dog, Little Titch, who doesn't seem to like her. She looks through things that used to belong to Martha and starts to get maudlin. Elsie comes home from work sick. Exotic dancer, Pip Mistral, calls on Charlie and invites him to a party on Sunday for the birthday of one of her friend's at their flat.

Len and Harry buy new clothes for the party. Concepta and Val have fallen for the story about the regimental do. Elsie gets in some new dresses for Emily to try on to compliment her new look. Ken feels guilty about going to the party. Concepta doesn't realise that Harry has dosed himself with aftershave and thinks it's Lucille's cheap scent.

Ken is livid about the story in the paper, annoyed that David has let the family down even though he was always viewed as the golden boy. A bad-tempered Len bickers with Jack and Annie over the story. Stan has been put off David by the allegations. Minnie wonders what Wormold wants with Ena.

Elsie forms a plan to squeeze her repair costs out of Wormold. The Barlows are ostracised due to David's alleged bribe. Ena hints to Minnie about her inheritance.

Elsie is in a bad mood about Ena and takes it out on Dennis. Elsie knows that Ena will have something up her sleeve and determines to get in first. She's thrown when Ena is friendly to her and disarms her. Elsie nevertheless gives her a list of repairs she wants doing to No.11. Hilda is furious when Stan fills the house with paper. Albert gets the name of a paper merchant that Stan can do business with.

Jack tells Albert, Stan and Charlie about Ena's mysterious intervention. Mrs Ainsworth calls at 15 Mawdsley Street. She lets rip at Len about his supposed disgusting history of boozing and womanising. Len is mystified at what she means and matters aren't helped when Irma turns up, flaunting herself at him to win her bet with Dennis.

Swindley puts the prizes in the lucky dip barrel in the middle of the shop with a gents' watch being the star prize. Ena takes Minnie to task for failing to spot Norma Gee moving in with Len. Norma is pleased with her room and says she'll make no demands on Len. Annie is pleased that Len turned down April.

Dennis worries about the rent rise but Elsie cites an identical situation where Dot Greenhalgh's sister-in-law won her case in court. Ena tries to find out from Stuart what the committee's decision is likely to be but he's unable to assist. She sends Minnie out to find out what the Bold Street Mission's attendances are like. Len continues to enjoy Norma's food.

Ena wonders if there's been any sign of activity from the Tanners. Dennis tells Elsie about the notice. Elsie is calm, deciding not to row with Ena but to get everyone on their side. The clasp on Annie's gold bracelet is broken. Elsie starts her campaign with Annie, telling her "in confidence" that Ena is evicting them in four weeks. Annie immediately starts to spread the news, opining that the Tanners are being victimised.

Stan gets up early in the morning to speak with milkman Bert Lodge about the possibility of jobs with his firm. Elsie and Dennis create homemade damp patches and other household problems, hoping to give Ena the impression that No.11 has been falling to pieces for years. Ena sees through it all and tells Minnie she intends to get the Tanners out of the house. The residents anticipate yet another clash between the two. In the Rovers, Ena gives Elsie her notice in writing. Elsie goes for Ena in the snug and the fight spills out into the Street. The residents take sides. Ena tells Elsie she wouldn't be throwing her out if Swindley wasn't throwing her out.

Lucille is given the part of the maid in "Way of the World", in a joint production with the boys' Grammar School. Emily's instructor Mr. Hopwood takes her out for a coffee. George Dickinson accuses Jerry of having an affair with Irma. Jerry refuses to return and is chased for the £30 he owes him. Len writes Mr. Dickinson a cheque and he leaves.

Len takes Val to hospital in his van. Ken feels completely useless. Jerry worries about his future. Len gets a contract from Arnold Jenkinson to do a conversion job for one of his supermarkets. Ken discovers that if the twins are born before midnight he'll get tax relief on them. Willie Piggott is fined £150 for bribing Ken. Val gives birth to a girl and a boy. The Walkers break open the champagne for the residents to celebrate the birth of the first-ever set of twins on the Street.

Peter and Susan come home. No.9 is awash with visitors as the neighbours come over for a look at them. With the weather getting better, Hilda thinks about having the house done up.

Len shocks his neighbours by displaying open hostility towards Tom. Ena makes preparations for her trip to America. Lionel is puzzled by the lack of custom at the shop.

Elsie chastises Len for his attitude towards Tom. Emily advises Lionel to introduce a personal touch to his customer service. Sandra plans to lure Dennis to her birthday party.

Emily leads the trip to the Blue John Mines with Dennis, Sandra, Irma, David, Hilda, Stan, Charlie, Minnie, Albert, Elsie, Len, Jack and Annie in attendance. Arthur Walker looks after the pub. The residents view the mines, 850 feet below ground level. Irma grows frightened of scaring David off. Dennis escorts Sandra. Lucille sees Harry off at Liverpool. On the coach back, David presents Irma with an engagement ring from the cavern. She accepts it.

Ted's daughter writes to Albert asking him not to interfere. Lucille gets four 'O' Levels - Science, English, French and Geography. Ted is hurt by his daughter's indifference to him. The residents are shocked and shaken when No.7 collapses.

The residents fear the rest of the Street will fall down. The Barlows seek refuge for Peter and Susan in the Rovers as everyone moves out of their homes. The police rope the house off and Mr. Wormold arrives. Annie worries when Lucille doesn't return after a night out with friends. The menfolk start to shift the rubble in case Lucille is under it. She arrives home safe. The Surveyor detects no subsidence. The collapse was caused by a faulty beam over the bay window. Len is given the contract to secure the house. Ted decides to go back to the home and leaves. Lucille cries over No.7. Wormold feels it isn't worth the £300 repairs and tells Len to pull it down.

Emily worked until 2.00am getting the fashion show ready. The residents gather at the Mission Hall to watch the event. Irma, Sandra and Lucille model the garments and get mixed up back stage. Allan drops woodwork when he discovers girls. The show turns into a fiasco. Elsie is horrified to discover Dennis has bought 108 Christmas trees.

The nappies which Val put out to dry start to smoulder, filling the house with smoke. Val returns home and manages to put out the fire. Val’s furious with Ken but Annie tells her not to be too hard on him. Sandra lets Dennis store boxes of crackers in the Gamma Garments' storeroom after hours. Emily is cross with her when she finds out. Val breaks down at the thought of what could have happened to Peter and Susan. The Christmas trees are delivered, filling No. 11.

Irma and David go to get married. Jack gets Arthur Walker to look after the Rovers, as the residents leave, on mass, for the reception. David and Irma are married at Ridgeway Street Registry Office. Jack, Annie, Stan, Hilda, Len, Elsie, Ena and Minnie hide behind a screen at the reception and surprise the Barlows. Arthur leaves Lucille alone in the Rovers whilst he places a bet. Val is chatted up by a man called Frank Turner in the Street. He steals cigarettes from the shop, and gets Lucille to serve him at the Rovers. He makes her feel uncomfortable. Stan makes a speech at the reception. Turner tells Jack that Lucille shouldn't be serving behind the bar at sixteen and makes him see that he's going to blackmailed.

Annie confides in Len and Stan about Frank Turner's blackmail. Lionel agrees to step into Jack's shoes. David and Irma celebrate receipt of the deposit for their new house.

David suffers an injury during a football match. Len speculates about the identity of Turner's assailant. Annie relishes her role as lady chairman at the Licensed Victuallers' ball.

David hopes to continue as social officer for Weatherfield Athletic. Lionel cuts down on giving credit at the shop. Minnie is intrigued by Ena's mystery parcel delivery.

David attempts to take charge of his future. Dennis looks forward to Emily's photographs getting a public airing. Jim and Elsie get drunk together.

Minnie feels sorry for Ena upon learning that the Mission is to be demolished. Dennis despairs as a group of hippies descends on Number 11. Hilda makes a friend in the park.

Annie begins to worry about Lucille's whereabouts. Hilda is woken up by gongs from next door. Annie guesses that Lucille is with the hippies when Hilda gossips about them, as she found hippy magazines in her bedroom. She sends Jack to drag her home. Robert Croft recites his poetry at No. 11. Dennis finds one of the hippies meditating in the bath naked. The hippies get into Elsie's things.

Hilda takes Stan's dirty woolly socks for the wash. Jerry goes to court to sort out his divorce. Annie tells Jack she's given Alfred Wormold a full report of the goings-on at No. 11. Dennis doesn't understand the hippies' lifestyle. George Greenwood entertains Hilda in his work shed. She takes a shine to his budgie Winnie. The hippies are sleeping when Wormold comes knocking so he assumes they've gone. He tells Annie that Dennis is in arrears with the rent. Annie urges him to try again. Stan gets frostbite when working in the Rovers due to the thin socks Hilda gave him. Wormold is appalled by the vagrants at No.11 and gives Dennis a month's notice.

Stan is suspicious when Hilda treats him well. Hilda can't find her scarf and goes back to George's shed to look for it. Annie takes to her bed because of Lucille. Jack feels that Lucille has to decide to come back herself. Jenny Sutton joins the hippies but tells Dennis she thinks they're crazy. Dennis and Jenny learn about each other as they clean up the mess in the house. Jerry's divorce case is heard in court. He goes through all of his and Myra's marriage difficulties. Agnes Greenwood follows Hilda home from Oakenshaw Park to find out where she lives.

Jack becomes very old suddenly through worrying about Lucille. She returns when she gets lonely. Dennis doesn't know if he can trust himself alone in the house with Jenny Sutton. Stan gets Hilda to buy expensive food for him. Jenny is taken on at the Hotel as bar steward Maurice Rowe fancies her. George Greenwood gets Hilda a budgie called Mabel and she decides to keep it with Winnie. Hilda tries to tell Stan she is seeing George. Rowe takes Dennis off bar work and onto waitering again so that he can work with Jenny. When he gropes Jenny in the stockroom, Dennis orders him outside.

Dennis threatens to tell the management that Maurice Rowe is on the fiddle. Rowe pretends Dennis beat him and apologises to Jenny. Hilda writes Stan a note telling him of her unfaithfulness. He ignores it. Demolishers Jimmy Gibson and Miklos Zadic recce the factory. Lucille falls for Hungarian Miklos. Agnes Greenwood and Stan worry about the confession element. Elsie phones up and Dennis tells her about Jenny. Len tries to get her to talk about herself but she puts the phone down. Hilda discovers Stan has been entertaining a woman.

The demolishers move into the Street. Miklos promises Minnie he'll make it as painless as possible for Ena. Jenny tells Dennis she knows about him blackmailing Maurice Rowe and thinks he's clever. Ena is given the choice of a council flat or Sunshine Villas Old Folks Home. Jenny realises Dennis fancies her. Hilda investigates Stan's woman. Jerry agrees to take Irma skating to ease her boredom. Hilda tells George Greenwood she can't see him anymore. She agrees to let Mabel stay with Winnie. Dennis discovers Jenny has left for London.

Ena has spent a frozen night in the Vestry with the amenities cut off pending the demolition. She refuses to tell Mr Ironfield where she's going to live afterwards and insists he helps the removal men shift the harmonium. Jerry tells David that Irma hardly stayed on the ice at the rink but spent most of the night in the snack bar. Nevertheless she wants to go again. Dennis is depressed at Jenny's departure. Hilda questions Annie on her views about women working as she's thinking about devoting all of her time to Stan. Annie worries that Hilda's going to hand in her notice but Jack reminds her that it will deprive Stan of his beer money. Ena lets the removal men pack the van full of her belongings before telling them she's moving across the road to No. 5, much to Minnie's delight.

The residents try to clean the dust away from the demolition of the Mission of Glad Tidings. Len worries that Myra could try to jeopardise the divorce. Ena settles into Minnie's and tries to get used to being retired. The Brewery plans to redecorate the Rovers. Annie wants it done in Silver Buckingham wallpaper. The residents get to know Miklos. Jerry discovers Myra has been in the Street. Myra assures Len she is not contesting the divorce but she is interested in Jerry's relationship with Irma. Jerry decides to visit Myra to find out what she's up to.

Ena is curious about Minnie's habits. Myra is thrilled when Jerry calls. She assures him that she has no ulterior motives. Irma and Val chat Miklos up. They arrange a date but then want to back out. Minnie and Ena fall out about household money and sharing. Val and Irma try to set Emily up with Miklos. Len warns Jerry that Myra is up to no good. The Brewery refuse to decorate the Rovers to Annie's specifications so she tells them she'll pay for the decorating. Jack refuses. Miklos takes Emily out. Myra tells Jerry he's under Len's thumb. To show her that she's wrong he takes her out.

The Rovers is decorated. Emily tells Irma she and Miklos are getting very friendly. Myra flaunts her new friendship with Jerry. The Walkers change the old pumps. Annie is horrified to discover the factory is to be demolished when the Rovers is to be painted. Miklos worries about the demolition because the factory is so old. Myra calls on Jerry late at night and begs him to tell her that he loves her. She tells him that she is lonely and begs to stay the night.

The demolishers descend on the factory with bulldozers. Len is annoyed at Myra's presence in the house. Bobby goes missing. Minnie thinks Ena has driven him out. Annie strings onions up around the pub to get rid of the paint fumes. Len tells Jerry to get rid of Myra but he is keen to have her around. He warns him that they could be accused of collusion and goes away to leave them to it. The twins follow Bobby into the factory. Myra asks to spend the weekend with Jerry. He agrees. Minnie rescues Bobby. The demolition starts as Susan and Peter cower in the factory.

Ken and Val realise the twins are missing. Ken hears the twins squealing in the factory as they play in the puddles, he and Miklos carry them out, stopping the bulldozer. Myra tries to analyse where the marriage went wrong. She tries desperately to please Jerry. Ena accuses Minnie of being too interested in Bobby to see the twins. Val realises the twins are becoming more independent. Jerry visit's Myra's house and brings back some of her clothes. Annie complains about the dirt in the Rovers but Miklos wins her round. Ena tells Minnie that Henry has offered her lodgings again. Jerry refuses to sleep with Myra. Minnie begs Ena not to leave but Ena says she's accepted the offer.

Ena fights her emotions as she prepares to leave the Street. Myra fails to persuade Jerry to give their marriage another try. Ken fears that Val feels let down when he does not send her a valentine.

Lucille takes up with art student Tim Jordan. Jerry is pleased that he feels nothing for Myra. Len and Val take care of Elsie, she gives nothing away. Tim charms the ladies in the Street. Jerry discovers Myra has told the court she's spent the night with him. Minnie advertises in the shop window for a man for companionship. The students collect for rag week. Len assures Jerry he's in the clear as no one knows Myra stayed. Annie throws the students out of the Rovers. Tim bets Lucille he can get the Rovers to pay up for rag week. David tells Minnie to talk to Ena before she advertises. Mr Stock, an enquiry agent, checks Jerry out. Jerry tells him Myra is lying. Elsie lets it be known she's home for a break because Steve has been posted to Panama. Annie is kidnapped by the students, who demand £5 for her release. Jack starts off the appeal with a penny.

The students campaign for ransom money but Jack doesn't pay up as he's enjoying Annie's absence. Elsie doesn't know how to get in touch with Dennis. Jerry broods about his divorce and is bitter towards Elsie. Minnie becomes an agent for a catalogue. Hilda is annoyed as it is the same firm that she's an agent for. Annie enjoys her captivity at the University and gladly pays the students five guineas. She poses in handcuffs for the evening paper. Tim Jordan asks Lucille to appear in the rag procession on a float as a 1920s Bathing Beauty. Hilda warns Minnie off her patch. A triumphant Myra tells Jerry that the divorce won't get to court as she has a witness to prove they were together. Irma discovers that Emily is reading Miklos's books on Communism. Jerry is surprised that anyone local would stick their neck out for Myra. Hilda feels bad when she finds out that Minnie has taken to drink.

Jack is a bundle of nerves and hasn't told Annie about Jerry's request. He shocks Annie by telling her to shut up when she goes on at him about taking a parcel to the post office. Len tells Jerry he was out of order asking Jack to lie for him. Jerry feels he has no other choice. Elsie sets tongues wagging by coming into the Corner Shop looking a mess. Jack is afraid of lying in court but wants to help Jerry. Miklos arranges to meet Albert at the Rovers to give him his dad's collection of Hungarian coins. Mr Stock tells Jack about a mate who got done for perjury before asking him whether he saw Myra inside Len's. Jack is in the middle of denying it when Jerry stops him and changes his own statement. David feels there must be something more to life than serving a load of gossipy women.

Albert tells PC Conway that Miklos stole the coins. David likes the idea of living somewhere where he doesn't know anyone. The residents worry about Elsie, living in a pigsty in No. 11. Miklos accuses Albert of slandering him. He refuses to tell Albert where he spent the day. Miklos tells Emily he was visiting a friend in hospital. The police catch the thief trying to sell the coins. He's a casual worker from the building site. George Dickinson turns up and asks Jerry to take Myra back. Elsie breaks down.

The residents wonder at what Elsie is doing, locked away in No.11. Len realises that it's Elsie's birthday. David tells Ken he's going to play a game of football - his first since the accident. Val gets a letter from Dennis saying he's returning. Miklos tells Emily he doesn't want to put roots down. Len bangs on Elsie's door until she lets him in. He makes her talk to him. She tells him she's left Steve. She didn't fit in in America. He makes her admit that Steve wasn't the perfect husband but was a swine. She tells him they had nothing in common and nothing to talk about. Steve was posted to South America - he volunteered and didn't want Elsie to go with him. She tells Len that Steve had told her he was sorry he'd married her. She doesn't know what's going to happen to her.

David tells Irma he played football and never had a twinge but she slaps his face in anger. He tells her that he wants to play professionally again - for a team in Australia. The Barlows worry as Dennis sends furniture from London to store with them. Irma doesn't want to go to Australia. She tells David he can go on his own. She is shocked when Hilda says they'll come as well. Emily and Miklos realise they have no ties - they can do anything they want to. Elsie ventures into the Rovers. Annie gives her a free gin. Miklos kisses Emily.

Hilda gets on everyone's nerves about Australia. Dennis and Jenny Sutton travel up from London, needing a base. He gets her to pretend they are married to put the neighbours off. Hilda is stunned when Stan tells her that she can go to Australia - on her own. He's not leaving England. David tells Irma he realises they can't go to Australia. She tells him that she thinks she's pregnant. Dennis introduces Jenny to a surprised Elsie as "Mrs Tanner".

Elsie refuses to believe Dennis is married. Emily worries that Miklos is too passionate. Jenny tells Elsie they're not married. She tells them they can't sleep together. She locks Dennis into the parlour. David is told the Australian job is his. Irma realises they'd be stupid not to go to Australia when she sees the picture of the house that goes with the job. Dennis is annoyed that Elsie is playing Miss Morality. She dislikes Jenny and thinks it's only infatuation. Hilda breaks down when she is told about the emigrating.

Val lets Ken believe she's opening a men's barber shop. He is furious. Len thinks Jerry is running his life. Irma worries that no one is buying the shop because of the slum clearances. Ronald Wilde thinks he'll get shoddy workmanship from Jerry and Len for £180 a unit, but gives them the contract. David puts the sale in the hands of an agent. Len thinks the tender is too low. Jerry knows they'll make no money out of it but is thinking of the future. Len doesn't want to expand; he likes things the way they are. Jerry tells him he'll take the contract on himself.

Dennis and Jenny find it hard living with Elsie. Ken and Val plan a picnic but the car won't start. Emily is surprised at the amount of time she spends in the Rovers. She tells Val she fancies Miklos but doesn't know if she could sleep with him. Minnie amazes Ken by getting the car to work. Lucille feels Miklos is wasted on Emily. Miklos lets Emily's hair down and tries to get her into bed. He is angry when she stops him. She tells him that she tried and breaks down.

Len agrees to work on the maisonettes. Jenny threatens to leave unless Elsie is nicer to her. David tells the Gazette about his Australia plans in an attempt to interest people in the shop. Emily tells Val that she wants Miklos and wants to marry him but he doesn't want roots. David is horrified when he reads the report in the paper. Miklos tells Val it is because he cares for Emily that he can't pursue her - he knows he'll hurt her.

Maggie tells the Ogdens not to worry as the insurance will take care of the window. Gordon is angry that Les is happy to let Stan take the blame. Maggie stops Les from telling Stan the truth. Lucille advises Val to make Ken's cosy life a bit uncosy so that he'll consider moving. Jenny wonders why Dennis is so keen on a church wedding. The vicar, the Rev Peter Hope, puts Dennis off when he realises he is not a churchgoer and just wants the ceremony. Dennis asks Jerry to be his best man. Jerry refuses; he's off weddings. Val tries to make Ken see that No. 9 is too small but he gets angry and accuses her of fancying Ray.

Dennis and Jenny both wake at 5.00am and wake their households up to try to clear their nerves. Ena thinks she's heard of Les Clegg before. Albert buys a stag's head with the present money. The residents prepare for the reception but feel sure something is going to go wrong because it's Dennis. Elsie, Linda, Ernie Sutton and Jerry witness Dennis and Jenny's marriage. Annie, Lucille, Gordon, Maggie, Les, Len, Emily, Minnie, Ena, Albert and Wally Tanner join in the reception. Jerry shocks everyone by his speech - urging the Tanners not to be selfish and to work at their marriage. Unseen by anyone Jerry leaves for London. Jenny doesn't mind about Dennis going to Bristol. Les leaves the reception early because he doesn't want to stay around drink. Jenny spends her wedding night alone on Minnie's sofa.

Stan and Elsie return at 7.30am. Len tries to bring Maggie out of herself. Audrey buys a wicker elephant but the store delivers a swivel chair instead. Dickie loves the chair but it turns out to be the Barlows'. Hilda hunts after Elsie. Gary and Emily are horrified at Elsie's driving. In a slanging match in the middle of the street Hilda accuses Elsie of scheming to get Stan on her own. Elsie tells her she's not that desperate. Ken decides he'll have to sell the car to buy new furniture. Elsie crashes her car into the back of Ken's. Len moves into No.9. Effie Spicer moves into No.4, next to Ena, and crosses her with her airs and graces.

Convict Frank Riley traps Val. She tells him she has no children and is only just married. The womenfolk gather in the Rovers, not wanting to be on their own whilst the convict is on the loose. Val tries to alert Ena by banging on the water pipes. She is terrified when Peter wakes up and Riley realises she has children. Ken phones Val but Riley refuses to let her answer it, threatening to hurt Peter and Susan. Ena hears the phone ringing and begins to worry. Riley takes a fancy to Val and starts caressing her. Ena raises the alarm. Annie takes charge and Jack phones the police. Riley demands money and clothes from Val. He then tells her he wants something from her. The police move the residents into houses so no one is alone. Val promises that she won't raise the alarm if Riley leaves her alone but Riley sees the police outside. Ken arrives at the Rovers, not knowing anything of what is happening.

Len offers to talk to Steve but Elsie stops him. Emily helps out at St Mary's nursery. Maggie wants to keep Val on but Ena makes her feel guilty. Emily reveals that Ena told the vicar that the shop was too much for her. The Reverend James asks Emily to be his assistant at the nursery. Elsie prepares herself to tells Steve 'no' for the last time. In the taxi she hears over the radio that Len is at Steve's. She asks the taxi to take her home. The police arrive to tell Elsie that Steve is dead.

The Ogdens celebrate their silver wedding. Stan gives Hilda a fun fur. Annie discovers Lucille and Gordon have run off. Jack and Maggie inform the police. At the station, Gordon and Lucille miss the train to Gretna Green. Ena looks after the shop and finds Effie's slate with £10 owing. She lets Effie know she knows. Effie accuses Maggie and Val of telling Ena about the slate and breaks down. The party takes over the select and Ken plays his trumpet. Lucille worries about Gordon missing his exams.

Albert refuses to talk to the Barlows as they set off for Majorca. The panto starts at St. Mary's. Len, Albert and Stan leave beer around the stage to keep them going. Ken and Val realise they don't want to go and call off the trip. The panto ends with Elsie leading everyone in 'Jingle Bells'.
