Investigating magistrate Nino Scotellaro is on the trail of Mariano Suro. He has been hunting the fugitive boss of Cosa Nostra for years. This time he really is just one step away from catching him. But when the arrest fails, a furious Nino points his finger at the institutions, which he believes are accomplices. This accusation, however, will backfire, eventually taking everything away from him

Everyone is convinced that Nino Scotellaro is dead, including his wife Luvi and his sister Leonarda. In reality, Nino is alive in a remote village. He is a guest of Don Salvatore Tracina, the only person who can help him. An unlikely alliance begins between the two that will transform the magistrate Nino Scotellaro into the Mafioso Balduccio Remora.

Now that Nino is “free” again, it is hard for him not to think about his previous life. But the desire to avenge all he has lost takes over. And so, in his new identity as a Mafioso, he becomes part of another “family”: the Tracinas, a clan in decline, rivals to Suro. Together with them, he begins his revenge. To fight Suro, though, they need weapons.

Nino's arrival upsets the balance of power in Wowterworld, the Tracinas' base. Nino, who has never liked receiving orders, is ready to do anything to get what he wants, even to challenge Don Salvatore Tracina.

The power vacuum allows Nino to adopt a new and atypical command strategy for a Mafia clan: democracy. To defeat Suro, though, he also needs the support of the other Mafia families who have long hated Suro but never rebelled.

Nino goes further than anyone has ever dared before, but he soon realizes that his magistrate's methods are not enough: to catch Suro he has to fully become part of the criminal world he has always fought.

Upon arriving in Suro's presence, Nino realizes there's a greater enemy: all those people who have helped the boss for years in his fugitive days. People very dear to Nino. To obtain proof and discover who's involved, he must reach the archives. The same archive that Luvi, his wife, is also searching for to erase a secret from her past that she wants to rid herself of.

Nino convinces Teresa to get her hands on the archive and arranges a meeting with Calogero, unaware that Leonarda and Costardello are with him. But he's not the only one who wants the archive; the state is also after it, and Testanuda is willing to do anything to find it. Meanwhile, Luvi comes dangerously close to a truth that could change her life.

Nino runs away with Suro, an unlikely traveling companion, hoping to return to his old life. However, he hasn't reckoned with the lengths to which those who choose to protect the corrupt part of the state are willing to go. And above all, he hasn't reckoned with the fact that Luvi's life is about to collide with his own.

Suro has been arrested; the target of Nino Scotellaro, a former magistrate, has been accomplished. But can Nino's thirst for truth and revenge really end with this arrest? This is what Nino asks himself as he returns home for the showdown with Luvi, while his sister Leonarda searches for Balduccio Remora, unaware that her brother is behind the name.

Nino and Teresa intend to wage war against the state. To do so, they need the support of the entire Suro family of sisters and cousins, a myriad of mice, and eight hundred copies of The Count of Monte Cristo. Meanwhile, Leonarda continues her search for Balduccio Remora, while a repentant Luvi searches for a way to find evidence of the state's collusion and bring justice.

The State on one side, Cosa Nostra on the other, Nino and Teresa have reopened negotiations with the State, and for Nino the goal is clear: to get to the archive, at any cost. But is it really by reaching that truth that Nino will find his peace? Unfortunately, he hasn't yet come to terms with his new enemies, who are, if anything, more ruthless than those of the past.
